My adoption journey began in Liverpool, where I was born in 1994 and have lived my entire life.
In 1999/2000, I was adopted by Helen and Tony, both civil servants working for HM Customs & Excise (now HM Revenue & Customs). Although I grew up as an only child, I was surrounded by a large extended family filled with cousins, making family gatherings lively and full of love.
As a child, I was known to be a little naughty, always curious and full of energy. Despite my mischievous streak, I channelled my creativity and passion into my education. In 2014, at the age of 20, I was diagnosed with dyslexia, and in 2024, at the age of 30, I received a diagnosis of ADHD. These diagnoses helped me understand myself better and find strategies to succeed.
In 2017, I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Food Design Technology from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). I furthered my education in 2022 by gaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) (Secondary) in Design Technology from Goldsmiths, University of London (UOL). I also achieved Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from the Department for Education (DfE).
One of my most vivid memories is moving in with my new family at the age of five. The excitement and curiosity I felt were palpable. I vividly remember the warmth and kindness of my mum and dad, who welcomed me into their home with open arms. One of my fondest memories from that time is a trip to the zoo with my new parents. The day was filled with wonder as I saw animals I had only read about in books. My mum and dad made sure the experience was magical, and their love and care helped me feel secure and happy in my new surroundings.
To help me understand my life story, I had a photo album put together by the social worker. Although the album was poor in quality, it contained pictures and snippets from my early years. This album was meant to help me piece together my past and understand my journey.
My experience with adoption inspired me to create "Finding My Rainbow Family," a comforting and supportive resource for children navigating the adoption process. Having witnessed the transformative power of love and family firsthand, I felt a deep, personal calling to provide a safe space where children could explore their feelings, understand their new family dynamics, and find joy in their unique journey.
"Finding My Rainbow Family" is designed specifically for children experiencing adoption, helping them navigate the complex emotions and changes that come with joining a new family. Through creative activities and prompts for emotional expression, the book encourages children to express their feelings in a healthy way and engage in activities that promote understanding and emotional regulation. It focuses on building connections and highlighting the positive aspects of their new family, fostering strong, loving relationships.
By providing a supportive environment for meaningful conversations about adoption, the book helps children feel seen, heard, and supported throughout their adoption journey.
My hope is that "Finding My Rainbow Family" will help children find love and happiness in their new family, making them feel truly cherished and understood.
The book includes pages where adoptive family members and others in a child's life can write letters to them. I believe these letters offer several meaningful benefits. They can help strengthen the emotional bond between the child and their adoptive family, making the child feel more secure and cherished. These letters serve as physical keepsakes that the child can revisit throughout their life, capturing the love, support, and encouragement from their family. During the adoption process, children may experience feelings of uncertainty and anxiety, and these letters can provide reassurance and comfort, helping them feel more confident and supported.
Writing letters encourages open communication within the family, allowing family members to express their feelings, share their hopes and dreams for the child, and offer words of wisdom and guidance. These letters can also help the child develop a sense of identity and belonging, boosting their self-esteem and helping them feel more connected to their new family.
Additionally, letters can mark important milestones in the child's life, celebrating their growth and progress, and making them feel proud and appreciated. Overall, these letters are a beautiful way to show love and support, helping the child feel seen, heard, and deeply connected to their new family.
Best Wishes
Paul
